Overview
Week Without Driving is a national challenge run by America Walks. For one week, people who normally drive get around another way and see the city the way people who can’t drive see it every day.
LVBT is joining for the first time in 2026. Our version is a social media challenge: take one or more trips without driving between October 1 and 8, post about it, and tag us. Every day someone posts earns an entry in a giveaway. The rules and first-trip tips are on the participant page.
Motivation
Car dependency is easy to ignore from the driver’s seat. It becomes obvious the moment you try to get across the Valley without one: a bus that comes every half hour, a sidewalk that ends at a wall, a shopping center you can see but can’t safely walk to.
We want as many people as possible to have that experience and share it. Their posts do two things at once. They show neighbors what the system asks of people who ride, walk, or roll, and they build the audience LVBT needs on Instagram and TikTok, where younger Las Vegans already are.
The project also gives LVBT a public event to invite partner organizations into, from agencies and departments to other nonprofits, and it can become an annual program LVBT owns.
Approach
The challenge is designed to be as easy to join as possible. One trip counts. A first bus ride counts. We are not asking anyone to go a whole week without a car, though we will celebrate the people who do.
During the week, LVBT posts its own stories every day and shares what participants post. After the week, LVBT publishes a recap video and a written recap, and the participant page keeps the highlights.
We are asking the RTC and other local organizations to participate and to share their own content during the week.
